my tips for design grads:

  • continue working at your campus job where you are loved and admired for six months
  • move to a new city without job hunting first
  • spend six months totally unemployed with nothing to do
  • start drinking a lot of cheap beer
  • freelance at your much more successful former college (and current) roommate’s firm for two months
  • volunteer at an art museum
  • intern at a contemporary art museum
  • realize the only useful skills you learned in school were how to use a straight edge and an xacto
  • realize you didn’t learn those skills very well
  • hear back from less than one in ten jobs you apply for
  • interview with every creative staffing agency in the city (none will find you work, but one will give you a free tshirt)
  • one day, get an unsolicited email from someone looking for a freelancer who found your information on a semi-obscure professional job website (which no longer exists)
  • start drinking gin
  • freelance for four months
  • get added to the payroll
  • after working for a year, attend a meeting with a client where you learn the shit you have to churn out in a week is being billed for more than you earn in a year
  • start drinking a lot of gin
